ABOUT MARBLE CLEANING

Marble is an easy surface to maintain when cleaned periodically using a non-acidic cleaner.

However, if you aren’t diligent in your maintenance efforts, wear will set in and create hollows and low points for dirt to collect.

Marble Sealing

All non-resinated stones have a natural degree of porosity. Meaning there are risks of discoloration from exposure to colored or reactive liquids. Stain removal poultice processes exist to remove stains, however may require many applications and the use of a solvent capable of dissolving the stain. And there are no guarantees that stains can be removed. Therefore, MARBLELIFE® fully recommends sealing your stone surfaces after having them restored. Sealing is an inexpensive and preventative “insurance” for your marble or stone.

Some tips for cleaning and maintaining your marble:

  • Sweep or dust your marble surfaces regularly. This removes loose grime and debris that can be ground underfoot to wear your stone.
  • Never use acidic materials on marble and keep such substances away from your marble surfaces. Acidic materials dissolve marble, resulting in micro etches, spill marks, and a generally dull appearance.
  • Use only non-acidic surfactant-based cleaners designed specifically for use on marble.  Products that claim to clean and shine should NOT be used, as they require the application of an oil or wax to impart an artificial shine.

Kensington Marble Cleaners ® cleans, restores, maintains, polishes, and protects more marble than anyone else in the industry. Regular maintenance of your stone surfaces, which includes cleaning and sealing, will help you avoid costly repairs while keeping your surfaces beautiful and protected against staining and etching. Our professionals will review a variety of cleaning and sealing options based on your personal needs.

A polished marble floor will scratch very easily compared to a harder stone like Granite. Tracking sand with shoes will scratch marble surfaces as with most natural stones. The reflectivity on a polished marble floor is caused by natural crystals in the stone. When sediment and grit are walked, dragged or scraped across the stone, the crystals become damaged and the surface is no longer even causing a loss in reflectivity and shine.

Therefore good barrier matting (rug or door mat) is essential as a preventive step. Keeping indoor slippers to change into is also recommended as outdoor grit can often get trapped in the treads of your shoes. Taking the above measures will help to prevent loss of shine in your New York marble, however, another important factor to consider is the possibility of staining.
